Following up on "What is Hetecia a God of", What is and isn't Ishtar a God of? (In particular, how much was she a war goddess?)
This is a preeetty vague question! Generally speaking: there is no single deity "Ishtar," there was a large network of partially interconnected deities. The two deities at its core were Inanna of Uruk (who herself "absorbed" a goddess of the city of Zabalam, it seems), the tutelary goddess of Uruk, and Ishtar of Agade, the tutelary goddess of the Akkadian kings. The three primary spheres of influence for these two were, at least initially, royal power, war and love. They also developed an astral connection, representing Venus (this goes neatly with having moon as father and sun as twin). In theory these two were syncretised = so the goddess of Uruk was Ishtar in Akkadian while the goddess of Agade Inanna in Sumerian - but the matter is pretty complex. Ishtar of Agade could function as a fully independent deity, Ulmashitu (meaning "she of Ulmash," E-Ulmash being Ishtar's temple in Agade). One of her epithets became a separate goddess of similar character, Anunnitu ("warlike" or "skirmisher"). Then there are various "regional" Ishtars who often only share the name with these above. The term is so vague in this context that sometimes it's best to understand it as stand-in for "goddess" than anything. These include the 1st millennium Assyrian Ishtars (of Assur, of Arbela and of Nineveh; these 3 actually share a lot with Ninlil instead in terms of spheres of influence though they retain warlike traits), Ishtar of Babylon and so on. A notable early Ishtar/Inanna of this sort is Ishtar of Kish, originally the wife of the war god Zababa, herself likewise warlike. A third category category are the foreign goddesses whose names could be rendered using "Ishtar" as a logogram: Hurrian Shaushka (decidedly warlike; has similar connection to the sphere of sexuality too, additionally functions as a healing deity; sometimes called "Ishtar of Subartu" or "of Nineveh" but not equivalent to the IoN above fully), Elamite and Hurrian Pinikir (seemingly chiefly an astral deity), Eblaite and Hurrian Ishara (not really war-related; spheres of influence vary but generally some combination of love, kingship, disease, the underworld and oaths), Hurrian "goddess of the night" whose actual name is presently unknown (does exactly what it says on the tin). Additionally there's what is sometimes labeled as "Ishtar types" in literature: goddesses who, for one reason or another, resemble the "classic" Ishtar and/or Inanna: Ninegal (a goddess of palaces), Ninsianna (just the astral aspect of Inanna alone), Nanaya (love, warlike character developed secondarily and was of limited importance), Kanisurra (love), and the like. There's a slight chance the personified rainbow, Manzat, also fits into this category as one inscription calls her "Manzat-Ishtar," an incantation names her a sister of Shamash, and finally the god list An-Anum puts her with "Ishtar types." And finally there are deities whose names are just cognates of âIshtarâ but who donât necessarily have much in common with any of the above, like the male gods named something like Attar or Ashtar, known for example from Ugarit or from the Arabian Peninsula.
